Northbrook Backyard Retreat

Frequently wet conditions in the back part of this lot have served to make this yard more of a nuisance than anything else.  Dirty dogs and limited points of prominence have greatly reduced the desire to use the space.  In order to alleviate these problems, the back portion of the yard will be cleverly separated from the rest of the property.  A creative barrier has been installed to keep the dogs out of the mud.  The impediment creatively integrates itself into the naturalized planting while receding back at one point to serve as the backdrop of the newly established focal point.  Access has been retained so during drier conditions the homeowner and her pets can venture to the back and sit amongst the plantings.  Those plantings consist largely of prairie style perennials that tolerate less than ideal conditions and will peak when the homeowner will most likely be using the space.

Revisions near the house have will also be done.  The existing patio was rather small and its location provided a cramped feeling.  An additional seating area will be installed. Its location will draw users further from the house where they can utilize the late afternoon sun, and it will also enhance the view of the newly established focal point and plantings in the back portion of the property.  This additional seating space will be linked with the existing patio, along with the access point to the backyard.  Plantings near the home will assist in defining areas, complimenting hardscapes, and screening and directing views.  They are also compatible with the mass plantings located in the rear of the property.
